March proclaims the beginning of Spring. So, lettuce rejoice. Yes, I did that on purpose. Now is the time to prepare those beds and get busy planting some early crops. With the help of the Farmer’s Almanac and a few old wives tales I have put together a great little guide for your spring planting:
First, let’s do a little soil prep. We like to add a layer of nutrition to the top of our soil. Our favorite in the Garden Center is Leafgro compost. It is a wonderful organic soil enhancer that we can’t say enough about. This will give you a great start to your planting season.
Mid-March: The old saying for St Patrick’s day is to plant your peas and potatoes. But don’t stop there. It is a great time for planting lettuce, kale, broccoli, cabbage, and chard. Don’t forget asparagus and garlic. Expand your garden and your pallet with some kohlrabi, leeks, arugula or okra.
March is also a great time to start those other summer plants inside. Plant tomatoes, melons, cucumbers and peppers now. This way your seedlings will be strong and sturdy by Mother’s Day when you can plant them outside.
If you need help selecting seeds or getting starter plants we have a great selection in the Garden Center. Come on in ask your questions and look at our great selection. We love to talk about gardening . We are so happy it is finally March!
