Schismatoglottis ‘Thailand’

A rare plant typically found along sandy streambanks in Southeast Asia, Schismatoglottis ‘Thailand’, can be an especially rewarding houseplant! As a member of the Aroid family, this plant appreciates a well-drained growing medium. Place this plant in bright indirect light and let 50% of the soil dry between watering for best results!

Schismatoglottis (all varieties)

A hard-to-find Aroid from Southeast Asia, Schismatoglottis is a relatively easy to maintain houseplant that is coveted by plant collectors for its gorgeous foliar displays. When kept indoors, this plant appreciates bright, indirect light and high humidity. Light-filed kitchens and bathrooms are ideal spots for them. It’s best to let about 50% of the soil medium to dry to the touch in between watering as the roots are susceptible to root rot when kept too moist.

Piper crocatum

With its shimmering leaves and gorgeous pink details, Piper crocatum is an excellent indoor trailing specimen for discerning plant collectors. These plants do best when provided with direct, filtered light such as a west facing window with a translucent curtain. Native to South American rainforest regions, this plant thrives when given ample humidity in a warm environment, a well-drained potting medium, and will do best when watered after the top inch of soil has become dry to the touch.

Alocasia ‘Dragon Scale’

Known for its deeply textured and shimmering gray-silver leaves, Alocasia ‘Dragon Scale’ is named very appropriately as its appearance certainly suggests something from a fairy tale. Alocasias can be challenging to maintain indoors, but certainly worth the effort for this prized plant. For an ideal indoor environment, provide a warm, humid, and bright spot in your home. Also beneficial for this plant is the use of a chunky, well-draining soil. Over-watering is typically where people go wrong with Alocasia.

Philodendron ‘Silver Sword’

A native vine to the rainforests of Brazil, Philodendron ‘Silver Sword’ will do well when grown as a trailing plant but will grow to its full potential and beauty when given a structure to climb on. Provide it with bright, indirect light, a warm and humid environment and this plant will absolutely thrive as it is one of the easier Aroid to care for. Look for a growing medium that will give this Philodendron a loose structure that provides moisture retention as well as aeration.

Seeds & Bulbs

Looking to start from scratch? We're proud to offer an array of the best selection of vegetable seeds and plants available anywhere.

Whether you're looking for vegetables, heirlooms, herbs or flowers, all of our seeds are GMO free! We offer organic varieties of the highest quality. Two of the companies that we deal with regularly are Botanical Interests and Burpee Seeds.

Keep in mind that we now carry seed tape. Seed tapes are the perfect, no-waste way to plant where space really counts — in containers, raised beds, or small gardens. Each strip of biodegradable paper is embedded with perfectly spaced seeds; simply unroll into a planting furrow and cover. Planting is precise, there's little or no thinning needed, and the germination rate is outstanding.

Planting Instructions

How to plant

  • Annuals should not be planted until after danger of frost has passed, or use precaution if planting early.
  • Perennials and cool-season annuals can be planted in early spring as soon as the ground can be worked.
  • Before planting, water your plants and the soil in your bed well.
  • Remove  plants from their pots gently
  • Loosen the roots by gently pulling them or cutting them if necessary to encourage them to grow out into the soil.
  • If plants are in peat pots, tear the pots slightly to make it easy for the roots to grow through.
  • Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball.
  • Put the recommended amount of fertilizer/soil moist and mix with the backfill soil.
  • Set the plant in the hole at the same level at which it was growing in the container.
  • Be sure the plant is not deeper than the original soil.
  • Add the backfill soil with amendments and carefully firm the soil around the roots.
  • Water well after planting and keep moist until the plants are established and new growth has started.
  • A thin layer of mulch will help keep the moisture in the ground and deter weed growth.

Have questions about planting? Stop by the Garden Center or call 610-876-7116 to speak with one of our staff horticulturists.
